Description
A striking memorial to Lieutenant Robert Burn Anderson of 1st Bombay Fusiliers. Born in 1833, the son of a Glasgow merchant, he died in captivity in China in 1860. This memorial was sculpted by Robert Jackson of London, England and installed at Glasgow Cathedral.
The decorated bronze sculpture resides on a plinth beneath two memorial windows with an inscribed brass plaque attached to the plinth. "In memory of ROBERT BURN ANDERSON/Lieutenant 1st Bombay Fusiliers /Brigade-Major Hodson's Horse /Adjutant Fane's Horse /Born in Glasgow 14th October 1833 /Died in China 27th September 1860 // A Soldier who fell in the war with China /In the service of his Country at the post of his duty /Loved in life and lamented in death /His schoolfellows thus record their sorrow and esteem."
Thankfully the memorial does not describe the ghastly details of his untimely demise.
Researching the artist, Robert Jackson, did not illuminate a great career. I only found few references to small sculptures and drinking fountains in London parks, and certainly nothing with the visual and emotional impact as this magnificent memorial.
