Description
The plaster rendition of the Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens as seen at the National gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. The bronze relief original is proudly displayed at Boston Commons in Boston, Massachusetts. This bronze-gold painted plaster relief stands approximately 12 feet tall and 17 feet wide.
Sait-Gaudens was commissioned to memorialize Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the men of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first regiment of African-Americans to enlist into the Union Army after the Emancipation Declaration in January,1863. The heroism, gallantry and valor of the 54th was celebrated after their attempt to storm the Confederate held Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina on July 18th, 1863.
Colonel Shaw was killed leading the attack, and nearly half of the 600 men in the regiment were also killed, missing, or taken prisoner, which meant that they would be forced back into slavery or executed. The bearded sergeant depicted in this iconic sculpture is thought to be William Harvey Carney. He was born into slavery in 1840 and escaped as a young man via the Underground Railroad. For his bravery and gallantry during this battle he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The legend of this regiment was dramatized in the Oscar-winning 1889 film "Glory". It is well worth the watching.
