Description
The memorials and statuary in our nation’s capitol honor important figures and events in our history. Seldom is mentioned the average American citizen, except at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The FDR Memorial is tucked away in a secluded area off the National Mall by the Tidal Basin. Though remembered by hundreds of millions as one of our greatest Presidents, FDR was also vilified by many and remains a very controversial figure in American political history. He was elected an unprecedented four times and led the country through two critical crises, the Great Depression and the Second World War. Yet erecting a monument to him was only authorized in 1974, and it was even 20 years later than that the Congress actually appropriated money for the construction. It was dedicated in 1997, 52 years after his death while serving his fourth term.
The monument consists of four plazas, or rooms, each telling a story of the first through fourth terms. The first tells the story of the Great Depression which had crippled the country and its economy by the time FDR took office. An eloquent and poignant series of bronze statues by George Segal depicts five hungry men waiting in a breadline, captured here in a monochrome photograph. It is a rare monument to the American people who endured great hardship themselves during this time.
