Description
The iconic statue of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial at night. The 19 foot tall white Georgia marble memorial was carved by Daniel Chester French in 1920, and it sits in the center gallery of the Lincoln Memorial. Above Lincoln's head is the epitaph by Royal Cortissoz, American journalist, art historian and art critic.
The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in May, 1922, just a wee bit over a hundred years ago, when many people still had living memory of this revered President. Even today this memorial draws thousands of people daily to pay homage to one of our countries greatest presidents, and visiting it feels much akin to entering a sacred site.
The sculptor was in fact fluent in American Sign Language, and Lincoln's left hand is the sign for the letter "A", while the right is the sing for the letter "L".
