Description
As if charging out of the woods to put down the insurrection, this image is a detail of one of the most dramatic sculptures in our country. The full title of the statue is "Cavalry Charge", and this immense bronze statue can be found at the northeast corner of the reflecting pool at the U. S. Capitol.
"Cavalry Charge" is one of two extraordinary and dynamic works by sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady flanking his more calm, almost aloof tribute to General Ulysses S.Grant mounted on his horse in front of the Capitol building. The other is "Artillery".
Commissioned in 1902, Shrady spent over 20 years creating these impressive art works. The bronze giants were cast at Roman Bronze Works in New York, and "Artillery" was installed in 1912, while "Cavalry Charge" was completed in 1916. The centerpiece was completed with the assistance of sculptor Edmund Amateis, but sadly, Shrady died just two weeks prior to the monument's dedication in 1922.
The statues were all repaired and restored to their original bronze finishes in 2016.
