Description
When making this photograph I was reminded of an old Greek proverb which says "a society grows only when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." Only later did I discover that this stained glass memorial window is dedicated to Rachel and Paul Mellon who funded Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia where this window was seen.
Trinity Episcopal Church, modeled after 12th- and 13th-century French country churches, stands in the center of Upperville as a reminder of the contributions philanthropist Paul Mellon made to his local community during his lifetime. The church is a beautiful tribute to the wonderful architectural tradition of medieval France, and is a delight to find alongside Route 50 in rural Northern Virginia.
Paul Mellon was born in 1907 an heir to the Mellon banking fortune. Although he worked as a clerk in a Mellon bank in his twenties and was an Army major serving in the OSS during World War Two, he spent much of his life as a full-time philanthropist. The church was constructed in the early 1950's, and is reported to have been partly built from fixtures salvaged from European churches destroyed in the Second World War. He was also instrumental in the foundation and population of the art found in the National Gallery of Art. Paul Mellon died in 1999.

Such thoughts, this provokes, and that it is in Virginia! is especially wonderful; and that its' premise you quote about Old men planting trees..etc" so stirring and philosophical..., and that it is dedicated to the Mellon family, the Founder/funders , a family dedicated to Beauty and Love of God, and their Homeland, USA. And, !!, the window !! it is just so beautiful, and full of treasured thoughts for inspiration. Thus, 'when a tree is planted', does the world become a better place. I love the ornamental Plate ..painted sooo beautifully, captured so dramatically. BRAVO,KUDOS:: VIVA
