Description
Benares is also called Varanasi or Kashi. It is one of the oldest cities of the world which has been continuously inhabited. It has more than a three-thousand-year history. It is on the river Ganges. It is considered to be one of the sacred cities of India and occupies an important place in the religious geography of the country.
Ghats in Varanasi are river front steps leading to the banks of Ganges River. These Ghats have a mystic appeal. The city is said to have eighty-eight ghats.
Manikarnika Ghat is considered one of the holiest cremation grounds among the sacred ghats, alongside the river Ganges. Transcending the limitations and sufferings of human life, beyond the cycle of birth and death, is believed to be the promise of this ancient land. And many seekers aspiring for that “moksha” or liberation come visiting Varanasi, hoping to experience that which is untouched by thought.
