It is considered to be one of the sacred cities of India and occupies an important place in the religious geography of the country.
Ghats in Varanasi are river front steps leading to the banks of Ganges River. These Ghats have a mystic appeal. The city has eighty eight ghats.
Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the main ghats of Varanasi. It is located close to Vishwanath temple. This Ghat is most famous for its Ganga Aarti (a holy fire ritual) which is an elaborate and lively ceremony that takes place every evening at dusk. The priests performing the aarti are those learned in Vedas and Upanishads. The hour-long ritual can be watched from the ghat or boats moored at the river bank.
