Description
Hoover Dam. Hydroelectric power station at the base of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, Nevada, USA. The U-shaped power station (centre) contains seventeen main turbines which convert the energy in falling water into electricity. The power station has a capacity of 2000 megawatts of electricity. The dam (bottom) is a concrete arch-gravity type, meaning that the water load is carried by both gravity action and horizontal arch action. It contains two and a half million cubic metres of concrete. It is 221 metres high and 379 metres wide at the top. Energy from the dam is supplied to the states of Nevada, Arizona and California.
