Description
Hoover Dam. Hydroelectric power station intake tower in the reservoir above the Hoover Dam, Nevada, USA. Lake Mead was created by building the 221 metre high dam (not seen) across Black Canyon on the Colorado River. There are four intake towers in the reservoir, two on either side of the canyon. Each controls one quarter of the water entering the power station turbines. Nine metre diameter penstocks (pipes) connect the towers to the power station. The flow of water is controlled by cylindrical gates within the tower. The power station at the Hoover Dam supplies energy to the states of Nevada, Arizona and California.
