Description
I captured this photograph along the trail to Secret Beach and Thunder Rock Cove, within the Samuel H Boardman State Park corridor, Southern Oregon.
I captured this photograph at Thunder Rock Cove within the Samuel H Boardman State Park scenic corridor of Southern Oregon. Unique landforms, sea caves, sea stacks, and adjacent rocks combine with the hydraulics of powerful crashing waves to funnel water and air into dramatic, thunderous eruptions. The "thunder" echoes through the cove and is truly a unique experience.
The trail to Thunder Rock Cove in Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor is 0.8 miles meandering along the Oregon coastal cliffs. There are great views from the trail both north and south as well as down to Secret Beach which is accessed from a trail offshoot of the Loop Trail to Thunder Rock Cove.
The phenomenon is that when a large wave enters the cove, it is forced to wrap around and into a sea cave carved out of a cliff. Massive amounts of water and air are forced back into the cave thus creating so much pressure that when the wave strikes the back and when the forces on the air and water cannot push any further, the wave and air are forcefully expelled backward thus creating the thundering sound that often reverberates through the rock and cove. The thunder sound is much louder during storms and large swells.
The Samuel H Boardman Scenic Corridor is a bit of heaven on earth. At 12 miles long, it’s often cited as the most epic part of Oregon’s coastline. With nearly 10 stops in Samuel H Boardman State Park, one could easily spend a full 2 days exploring this incredibly gorgeous stretch of land. You will find it hard to believe what you're seeing from your car window or just a short walk from your parked car at one of the numerous viewpoints available. Breath deeply, take it all in, and relax in the wonder of what nature provides.
