Description
I captured this photograph just above the trail to Secret Beach as seen in the foreground. This typical Oregon coastal paradise and seaside gem is found along the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor, which is known for its Pacific Northwest beauty. The trail to Secret Beach will not disappoint as it leads you to various vistas lined with massive cliffs, giant Spruce trees, and natural stone bridges hewn from black volcanic stone. Bring your camera for a spectacular waterfall photo opportunity as well.
Secret Beach is true to its name as it isn’t easy to find where the Oregon Coast Trail sort of squeezes between the road and a popular overlook to Thunder Rock Cove. Park at the turnout, look for the trailhead to the right. See "directions" below. You'll find a marked trail that leads down to a pocket coved beach. The hike down is steep but short and moderate.
Secret Beach itself is pristine with fine-grained sand, hugged by ocean-chiseled, massive sea cliffs once again creating stunning vistas typical to Samuel H Boardman State Park. The sea cliffs and rocks shelter the petite beach from the brunt of crashing waves and wind, allowing visitors a secluded spot of serenity as one enjoys the walk along the surf often noted in solitude. Take note it can only be enjoyed during low tide.
Directions:
As an unofficial beach, Secret Beach not only doesn't show up on a lot of maps but the access turn-out is easily passed along the 101. Look for a small gravel parking area approximately 1/3 mile south of milepost marker 345 on Highway 101. Park and walk to the trailhead as you also enjoy a spectacular overlook onto Thunder Rock Cove (see my other photos of this natural wonder). From the trailhead proceed until you see a marker and fork in the trail denoting the Loop Trail to the left and Secret Beach trail to the right. The Loop Trail also should not be missed as it reveals stunning vistas of Thunder Cove and unique vistas of the northward and southward coastline and seascapes (see my other photographs of the Loop Trail). The Loop Trail will take an extra 30 minutes and will as its name implies "loop" the hiker back towards the actual trail to Secret Beach. At that point one can continue on to the left where marked as "Secret Beach and Fall" or head to the right to proceed back to the parking area. Both trails are primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching and are best utilized from March until October. Dogs are also welcome to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
