Description
Brookings Beachfront SunsetI captured this photograph at Brookings Beachfront Inn at Brookings Harbor. This is the first beach town to visit as you cross the southern Oregon border north of Crescent City.
Brookings is known for its tremendous beauty year-round as it is often warmer here than in the surrounding Southern Oregon regions. It is famously known as Oregon's “Banana Belt.” In addition, one can often expect outstanding weather due to what is known as the Chetco Effect. What is that? Since the city of Brookings-Harbor is situated at the mouth of the Chetco River, a northeast-to-southwest oriented river basin draining out of the Siskiyou Mountains creates this phenomenon called the “Chetco Effect” when the airflow aloft parallels the river basin, resulting in warming the basin interior. When a downslope, low-level, offshore flow is strong enough, it will erode the low-level marine layer typically present in Brookings. During these prevalent episodes, the temperatures in Brookings can match or exceed in temperature the warmer days in climate from the areas located immediately inland. Hence, the Chetco Effect.
