Long After Dark is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Released 2 November 1982 on Backstreet Records. It was the first to include Howie Epstein, bassist and harmony vocalist who become a staple for the Heartbreakers sound. The single “You Got Lucky” became an MTV hit and along with “Change of Heart” and “Straight Into Darkness” joined together to be Billboard Top 40 hits. Rolling Stone Magazine gave the album 4 out of 5 stars while other reviews were not as favorable.
Tom Petty died 2 October 2017 at the age of 66 of an accidental drug overdose, one week after the end of the Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He was honored as MusiCares person of the Year in February 2017 for his contributions to music and his philanthropy.
