The Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museum is perhaps even more beautiful than the maps displayed on its walls. The hall is 120 meters (390 feet) long and the walls are lined with ancient maps. But the ceiling is the most astonishing, decorated from end to end with frescoes adorned with fine stucco ornamentation. It is simply jaw dropping! Famous artists – amongst them Cesare Nebbia and Girolamo Muziano – contributed their paintings, and many scenes of Italian history are included.
The long corridor can be very crowded as thousands make their way each day to view the Sistine Chapel, which makes viewing the maps somewhat difficult. And many don't even bother to look up, thereby missing the most splendid ceiling apart from Michelangelo's famous work. All part of why the entire Vatican is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This will be the first in a long sequence where I gave up attempting to view the maps and concentrated on documenting this fabulous ceiling. The Halls of Maps was recently restored to its original glory and now gives new meaning to the phrase "over the top".
This photograph is cropped to the classic 4:5 ratio, allowing for 8" X 10", 16" X 20" style prints, all the way up to 48" X 60" sizes with astonishing detail, and are spectacular as a metal print presentation.. All of my Hall of Maps series will soon be available in square format, also.
