Description
Trevi Fountain of Rome is perhaps the most famous fountain in the world, and its origins can be traced to the ancient Roman world. In the 1st century BC, Roman engineers discovered a source of pure spring water 8 miles from the city and built an aqueduct to bring the water into Rome. The aqueduct delivered water to the Baths of Agrippa which served Rome for over 400 years.
Pope Urban VIII decided in 1629 that the public fountain located in the Trevi district of Rome was undistinguished and needed something more grandiose. It was 100 more years before Pope Clement VII sanctioned a design contest and the commission was awarded to local architect Nicola Salvi. Work was begun in 1732, but Salvi died in 1751 with the fountain half completed. Giuseppe Pannini completed the work in 1762.
The stone this fabulous fountain is created from both Travertine quarried from nearby Tivoli, along with the famous Carrera marble. Today this iconic fountain draws many thousands of tourists daily to see this wonderful creation.
