Description
If there is ever anyone who has earned the title of World Traveler, that person is Santa Claus. There’s not even an argument than anyone else could come close to earning this title.
The intriguing thing about Santa is that he does not rely, nor does he need to rely, upon the latest GPS system or military technological tool to get around on the planet – a wise, intelligent elf, Santa Claus is comfortable using the tools that were high technology centuries ago – a sextant, a map, a globe, a compass, a pencil, paper, a chart. Even today, wise intelligent people can and do use these tools to get around, not necessarily comfortable with relying upon a distant, disembodied voice with a British accent to direct them where they need to go (sometimes, it’s in the middle of a field, when the disembodied voice endlessly repeats that there is a road there).
Santa is happily comfortable in his warm study, with the cool lights of the North Pole in the background, looking through his resources to plan the big night ahead. One would think that, after all these years, he would have the trip down with no problem at all, but even a World Traveler as experienced as Santa cannot direct the things out of his control: children grow up, become adults, and have new children of their own, and they don’t necessarily live in the same houses where they lived years before.
These are all complications that Santa takes into account as he plans his Christmas Eve journey, and the details – because there are so very many of them – need to be finessed and worked out to a T before the big evening comes. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, there are too many other things to think about, too many other projects to do, to worry about the details of the trip.
But then again, a really excellent World Traveler knows all this. Merry Christmas, everyone.
