About the artist:
Averardo Ciriello (1918-2016), born in Rome, was a widely recognized Italian illustrator and painter of film posters.
In his early years, he attended the Castello Sforzesco School of Applied Arts in Milan before serving in the Navy for five years during World War II. He produced illustrations for the government during that time, including the official Navy newspaper.
Ciriello's first commercial work was for Roman children's weekly Acqua Salata in 1944. From 1945 to 1953, he was a regular cover artist for the magazine Sette. He also drew pulp magazines and illustrated classic books by Robert Louis Stevenson, published by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore in 1987.
Ciriello first gained recognition as a poster artist for Italian cinema productions. After designing his first movie posters for Lux Film in 1947, he created over 3,000 drawings for many other distribution companies.
His art had many distinguishing qualities. For example, the faces portrayed by Averardo Ciriello were painted to look like powerful photographs. The realism of the expressions, the wrinkles and the crumples of the skin, the eloquent glances... everything in this artist's posters appears alive and real.
Ciriello represents the moods and personalities of the protagonists of great films, often creating portraits of three-quarter faces. His primary skill lies in rendering lighter and darker areas, highlights, and shadows, while spontaneously modulating colors and tones. Together, they add depth to his character's faces, making them more realistic.
Among his best-known Italian posters are those he painted for the movie dramas "The Earth Trembles," (1948) "The Mill on the Po," (1949), "Variety Lights," 1951), and the comedy "Divorce Italian Style," (1961,)
From the 1960s, he designed numerous posters for American films, including for the James Bond series, various westerns, war stories, and science fiction films.
