Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''The Roots of Heaven'', a 1958 American drama film directed by John Huston. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Romain Gary and features an ensemble cast, including Errol Flynn in one of his final film roles.
Set in French Equatorial Africa during the late 1950s, the film tells the story of Morel (Trevor Howard), a passionate and idealistic Frenchman who becomes determined to protect the elephants of the region from poachers and the encroachment of civilization. He forms a group called "The Roots of Heaven" dedicated to preserving the natural world, and they embark on a crusade to stop the ivory trade and the destruction of wildlife.
Errol Flynn plays Major Forsythe, a war veteran who becomes involved in Morel's mission and joins the cause to protect the elephants. The film explores the complexities of their characters and their motivations for preserving nature in a changing world.
"The Roots of Heaven" delves into themes of environmental conservation, morality, and the clash between progress and tradition. It raises questions about the ethics of human actions that threaten the natural world and the importance of preserving wildlife for future generations.
Errol Flynn's performance as Major Forsythe is notable for its depth and maturity, marking a departure from his earlier swashbuckling roles. Trevor Howard delivers a powerful portrayal of Morel's unwavering commitment to his cause.
The film's cinematography captures the beauty of the African landscape and wildlife, adding to its visual appeal. John Huston's direction emphasizes the moral and philosophical aspects of the story, making it a thought-provoking and socially relevant film for its time.
While "The Roots of Heaven" may not be as well-known as some of Errol Flynn's earlier classics, it remains a significant film in his later career, offering a poignant and compelling exploration of environmental conservation and the human connection to nature. The film's message about the importance of protecting the natural world continues to resonate with audiences concerned about conservation and the preservation of wildlife.

About the artist:
Gösta Åberg (Sept. 6, 1905, Stockholm - April 9, 1981) was a Swedish painter, cartoonist, sculptor, and advertising artist. Between 1935 and 1965, Åberg designed posters for thousands of films, which are now part of the Film History collections at the Technical Museum in Stockholm.
Aberg creates incredibly modern conceptual graphic artworks. The faces of the movie stars are no longer the main protagonists of the composition, but often objects or distinctive scenes. The style is linear, geometric, essential.
Aberg creates extremely symbolic compositions, consisting of evocative elements but delineated in a precise manner. His works are characterized by simplicity and stylization. The objects are made uniform and simplified, giving the viewer a feeling of order and comprehensibility. Aberg is a refined interpreter of the world of cinema, which tends to make complex worlds immediate and clear.
