Based on the true story of Dr. Samuel Mudd, the film chronicles his unjust imprisonment for his alleged involvement in aiding John Wilkes Booth following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Warner Baxter portrays Dr. Samuel Mudd, a respected physician living in Maryland at the outbreak of the Civil War. After being falsely accused of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth, Mudd is arrested and sent to the notorious Fort Jefferson on Dry Tortugas, an island prison off the coast of Florida known as "Shark Island."
As Mudd languishes in captivity, he faces harsh treatment from his captors and struggles to maintain his innocence. Despite his protests and appeals, he is subjected to a grueling ordeal as he battles against the injustices of the legal system and fights to clear his name.
