Description
A dramatic electrical discharge of "crawler" lightning lights up the underside of a summer monsoon season thunderstorm and silhouettes saguaro cacti in Tucson Mountain Park, west of Tucson, Arizona near the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum. These tentacles of light appear frequently in meso-scale convection storms typical of the desert monsoon season summer storms in the American Southwest.
The lighting discharge is related to intracloud lighting, where the static discharge remedies electrical charge imbalances within a storm cloud. The crawler happens when the discharge of energy occurs either at the very top, or in this case along the bottom of the storm cloud.
This photograph was made using a wide, 16mm focal length and was a long, 6-second exposure time. I do not rely on lightning triggers for my storm photography, but prefer to make my own photographs without technological assistance.
The storm photographed here was the finale to the 2023 monsoon season on August 31st. It brewed up just north of the border and produced heavy hail and hurricane force winds in multiple microbursts. It was a very impressive display by Mother Nature and will make for a dramatic presentation on any wall.
