Description
A loaf of sliced bread on a cutting board sits in front of an open window. Outside, amongst a backyard of greenery, stands a man in a bowler hat. He is also sliced. Nothing sinister is meant with this painting. I wondered if I could pull off painting a loaf of sliced bread. That got me to thinking about if I could paint a person as if he or she were similarly sliced. Who better to get the treatment than the man in the bowler hat as part of my on-going homage to Magritte? The problem I faced was to figure out where such a setting would take place. Putting him outside the window allowed me to really draw focus on the loaf of bread. It is only when you take a closer look at the man that you realize he is sliced. And similar to Magritte's famous painting, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" the man in the bowler hat is merely an image of a man so slicing that image is not really slicing a man. It is merely slicing two images in the same painting. Hopefully, it's startling enough to make you look twice! I hope you enjoy it.
