Description
"The Dormition of Mary" is a large, wonderfully detailed and intricately carved wooden sculpture by Tilman Reimenschneider, located at St. James Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany.
St. James Church was built in three parts between 1311 and 1484. The east chancel was completed by 1322, the nave was built between 1373 and 1436, while the west choir which actually bridges a street was finished in 1471. It is in the western gallery that the two fabulous wood carvings by Tilman Reimenschneider are found. The other bring the famous Holy Blood altarpiece which details the Last Supper.
Tilman Reimenschneider, who lived from 1460 to 1531, was a German sculptor and woodcarver. He was one of the most prolific and versatile sculptors of the transition period between late Gothic and Renaissance, a master in stone and limewood. Reimenschneider settled in the Bavarian town of Wurzburg in 1483 where he opened up his shop. His large carvings of "The Dormition of Mary" and "The Holy Blood", each from a single piece of wood, were done between 1501 and 1505.
This photograph is in the 3:5 ratio Mural format, and is available in 20" x 12", 24" x 14", 30" x 18", 36" x 22", 48" x 29", 60" x 36" and 72" x 43". The 24" x 14" fits well into a 1/4 sized mat board cut of 30" x 20", the 30" x 18" also fits well into a 1/2 sized mat board cut of 40" x 30", while the 48" x 29" size is perfect for a full 60" x 40" mat. This will benefit any buyer with economies in both material and labor when selecting cohesive images for business and institutional decor. The 60" x 36" and 72" x 43" sizes may be mounted and framed as a print without mat, but are best displayed as stretched canvas or vibrant metal print to decorate a large wall surface with astonishing clarity and detail.
