General view from the orchestra, of the audience at the gala farewell and final performance at the old Metropolitan Opera House (Broadway and 39th Street), New York, New York, April 16, 1966. During the performance, conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882 - 1977) (center bottom, directly behind the raised hand of the musician in center foreground) tried a final time to save the building as an historic landmark, but the building was razed the following year as the Met's company moved to their new home at Lincoln Center.
