Carmel-By-The-Sea, California, USA – This is a sandstone rock face on the edge of a parking lot in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, which is frequently called the “crown jewel of the state park system.” Its 5.36 square miles includes rocky cliffs, canyons, forests, coves, tide pools, and the Pacific Ocean. The Reserve’s ecosystem features sea lions, elephant seals, orcas, sea otters, deer, bobcats, gray foxes, coyotes, wood rats, monarch butterflies, and many types of birds, including such seabirds as brown pelicans, Brandt’s cormorants, and black oystercatchers. Plant species include Monterey cypress trees, evergreens, lace lichen (which looks like Spanish moss), and Trentepohlia (an orange-pigmented algae).
