Description
The Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinas) is a medium sized woodpecker with a brown body, reddish tinge on the belly, black and white barred wings and back, light gray face and underparts, red nape, long bill, heavy body, and short wings. It measures about 9.25 inches in length and about 2.2 ounces in weight. It breeds in the eastern United States from Canada to Florida. Red-Bellied Woodpeckers are very vocal birds, with many varied calls. They feed on insects on tree trunks, insects in flight, seeds, fruit, and nuts. They nest in large deciduous trees such as elms, willows, and maples.
This adult male Red Bellied Woodpecker taking off from a branch and foraging berries was photographed at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area, in St. Charles County, Missouri on 1-31-2024. I used a Nikon Z9 camera body and a Nikkor 600mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/4000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1800. The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area was acquired by the State of Missouri from the federal government in the late 1940's. This 7000-acre area was used during World War 2 for production and storage of TNT and DNT, and during the 1960's for the processing of Uranium ore. Subsequently, the large property was thoroughly decontaminated, and then used as a wildlife conservation area.
