Description
Branigan is the debut studio ablum by American singer Laura Branigan, released in March 1982 by Atlantic records (SD 19289) Her signature song and single “Gloria” stayed on the US Bill Board Hot 100 chart for 36 weeks, a then record for a female artist, peaking at #2. In 1984 she reached #1 in Canada and Germany with the US #4 ht “Self Control”. In the UK “Gloria” and “Self Control” made the Top 10 Singles Chart. She also contributed songs to motion pictures and TV soundtracks including the Grammy and Academy Award winning “Flash Dance” soundtrack in 1983 and the “Ghostbusters” soundtrack in 1984. In 1985 she won the Tokyo Music Festival with the song “The Lucky One”.
Her success waned in the 1990's and the early 2000's and in 2004 while she was preparing new music and a comeback she unexpectedly died of a previously undiagnosed cerebral aneurysm. Then in 2019, also unexpectedly, the NHL's St. Louis Blues adopted “Gloria” as their unofficial victory song and went on to win their franchise history's Stanley Cup. As a result the song entered ice hockey lore as an “unlikely championship anthem” and the song enters again into history.
