Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''La Grande Voliere'', a 1948 French film directed by Georges Péclet. The film is a romantic drama set in the world of the French circus during the early 20th century.
The story revolves around a love triangle involving two trapeze artists, Philippe (Jean Desailly) and Lilli (Renée Devillers), and a talented clown named Antoine (Jean-Louis Barrault). Lilli is torn between her affection for Philippe, with whom she performs dangerous trapeze acts, and Antoine, who pines for her despite being in a comedic role as a clown. The film explores themes of love, jealousy, and the challenges of life in the circus.
"La Grande Volière" is known for its portrayal of the circus as a colorful and vibrant world filled with acrobatics, performances, and behind-the-scenes drama. It captures the unique atmosphere of the circus and the dedication of its performers to their craft.
The film's cast delivers engaging performances, with Jean-Louis Barrault standing out as Antoine, the clown who adds a touch of humor and pathos to the story. The film's direction by Georges Péclet emphasizes the contrast between the thrilling trapeze acts and the comical interludes provided by Antoine.
While "La Grande Volière" may not be as well-known as some other classic French films, it remains a charming and evocative exploration of life within the circus world. Its blend of romance, drama, and circus spectacle makes it a unique and entertaining cinematic experience.

About the artist:
Roger Jacquier (aka “Rojac”) (1913-1997) was a French illustrator.
From 1932, when he was 19, he created illustrations for film posters during the 1930s through the 1950s. His art style is considered unique in that he combines bold use of colors with dynamic compositions, which gives the viewer a clear sense of high energy.
The energy of his art is palpable in his movie posters. The French illustrator creates a mixture of styles, drawing both from reality and from more rarefied atmospheres, from sur-reality.
Rojac is a purist in the veristic representation of faces and characters, but his compositions unhinge the sense of reality in a dynamic way. Strong outlines, bold colors, juxtapositions of cold and warm hues, and complementary colors such as orange and blue, create animated and fast-paced scenarios.
His compositions are characterized by scenes within scenes, intersecting elements, making Rojac's approach to design and filmmaking complex magic. He also used hand-lettering for many of his titles and a wide range of typefaces for the other text.
