Human parainfluenza virus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of ribonuclear protein helices from the human parainfluenza virus (HPIV). These helices contain the viral genetic material, ribonucleic acid (RNA), in combination with proteins. HPIV is a paramyxovirus that causes different types of respiratory infections, including ear infections, sore throats, croup, pneumonia and bronchitis. It is most common in children and babies.
