Description
The Hood River Bridge is a truss bridge with a vertical lift that spans the Columbia River between Hood River, Oregon and White Salmon, Washington. The aging structure is deficient by modern standards, but remains an essential transportation link between Oregon and Washington. Nearly one mile long, the bridge is constructed of steel trusses on concrete pier supports with very narrow lanes. Drivers of large vehicles are advised to turn in your mirrors before approaching the Bridge as rear view mirrors are often damaged by colliding with the mirrors of other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction! Yikes! The American Empress, a 360-foot diesel-powered paddle-wheeler, passes under the bridge as it travels the Columbia River on its pleasure tour through the Columbia River Gorge. Houses in White Salmon, Washington line the Columbia Gorge hillside above the river.
