Description
An extraordinary bloom of the marvelous magenta flowers on the hedgehog cactus, Echinocereus Engelmannii are backlit by afternoon sun in Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona.
I knew this was going to be a special spring bloom when I counted 87 flower buds on this multi-stemmed specimen, and I have been rewarded for my diligent observation (and obsession) with this dramatic portrait display of color, shapes and shadows. This season is the 30th since I first saw these flowers bloom, and never have I witnessed such a wonderful display as I have been blessed to see during this year.
The hedgehog cactus typically has multiple spiny stems up to a foot tall, and in a normal year might have one or two, three-inch diameter flowers on each stem. To discover all of these blooming at the same time is a rare and magical find in the desert.
