Description
Aspergillus fumigatus. Macrophotograph of a petri dish culture showing a growth of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. Mycelial threads (white) are seen on the edge of the circular growth, with fruiting bodies containing spores at centre (blue/green). This fungus is common in soil, on plants and plant products such as hay or grain. Aspergillus fumigatus can cause a number of disorders in humans including allergy, respiratory infection (aspergillosis) and invasive disease. This may occur due to inhalation of a large quantity of the spores. Fungal balls can form within the lungs, and the fungus may spread to the brain, kidneys, liver and skin.
