Description
Between the Arizona Summer Monsoon rains and the sunsets, the sky can get pretty spectacular! How about phenomenally unreal though!! Sunsets in our Arizona Sonoran Desert sky can sometimes take on some out of this world, dreamlike effects!!
What was happening on this 1st day of August was just that! It reminded me of the 1977 Steven Spielberg Film "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind!" In fact this month is the 40th anniversary of that film's release. On August 31st they are having a one night 40th Anniversary showing (you will have to google for the details). So I have titled this "Close Encounters Of The 4th Kind," (the 4th being my encounter with this amazing photography, of amazing atmospheric weather)!

Wonderful sky. Another look is to do a 6x10 crop, cutting 2/3 of the dark cloud, but thats just my personal preference.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Alinna for your comment. It was a super storm, wonderful indeed. I was quite fearless back then when photographing these monsoon sunset events. So, I am glad to have the photography of these awesome, atmospheric conditions in their entirety, just as I witnessed it.
BIJAN PIRNIA
Hello sweet Janet, in your eloquent biography you wrote that the emotional content of your work is more important to you than the technique. That's obvious because not only is your gorgeous work a reflection of your tender emotions, you also bring out tender emotions in your viewer, my lady. The beauty of your soul is reflected in your lovely work, my lady. The world is a better place because you're in it.
Janet Marie replied:
Well Bijan, that is quite a write-up of what my photography evokes in you the viewer, and what it says about me the photographer. Thank you for your words expressed, I appreciate knowing that my work can stir positive emotions in those who view it. That is what any artist tries to do.

Interesting light!
Janet Marie replied:
It was an unusual summer monsoon storm at sundown. I was looking west, rain was pouring down, and the sun was setting behind this storm, creating what you see here. It reminded me of a spaceship landing, like something out of the movie Close Encounters. In researching the film, I discovered it was the 40th anniversary that month, and was going to have a one night showing. My story is in the description. Thank you for stopping by to share what you think about my close encounter of a 4th kind.
Jurgen Lorenzen
An amazingly dramatic composition, Janet, the drama is unreal!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Jurgen for your wonderful comment. It was unreal indeed, hence my title for this piece. Like a UFO was landing. It made me think of that movie, which just happened to be its anniversary month. You never know what you are going to get with our monsoon storms. They never let you down. Standing in the right place, at the right time is crucial.
Larisa Fedotova

This image does indeed look like a UFO...well captured and titled too!
Janet Marie replied:
Of course my encounter as I expressed was the amazing photography that came out of this phenomenal atmospheric weather system during our summer monsoon storms. The sun was going down behind this pouring rain, creating a marvelous light show, as though something just landed.
Wanda Brandon
Awesome capture. Great detail and remarkable tones.
Janet Marie replied:
Wanda! I can't take too much credit for the atmospheric beauty occurring. I would have to thank the Maker and Designer of the sun, clouds, and rain. I did have to take a chance in this storm to get this. Sometimes you get it right. Thank you for your great comment about this. I really appreciate it!
Jasna Dragun
Great sky capture !! l/f
Janet Marie replied:
That is a super storm, with total downpour of rain. The sun is setting in the background, creating this unusual lighting through this thick rain. It was an awesome day. Thank you for your comment and the fave, Jasna!

Lauren Boosey
Such an interesting composition, that light and clouds, wonderful capture!
Janet Marie replied:
The downpour is backl-it by the sun going down, along with all the storm clouds above, which made for an eerie, ethereal experience with the rain coming down. So I just photographed the event. All credit goes to the Creator for the atmospheric conditions that produced this interesting composition. During most monsoon storms, I am hunkered down in my house, hoping we have to much lightning or a micro-burst type winds. Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your wonderful thoughts about this. I really appreciate it! Janet💕

Ruth Housley
Wow this is very unusual Janet Marie!
Janet Marie replied:
The rain was coming down quite hard and the sun is setting behind the rain, lighting up the rain, giving it this affect. It reminded me of a scene from a science-fiction film, as though a space ship was landing like in the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It was interesting when I shot this scene that it was the 30th anniversary of that film. There was going to be a special showing to mark that anniversary, at selected theaters around the country. Thank you Ruth for sharing your comment about this. It was quite unusual indeed. I have shot a lot of photography of the monsoon storms and this one is unique. Janet💕
Sergio Mazza
An image that evokes an epiphany.

Susan Buscho
Certainly a very different cloud formation, Janet. Very stunning capture.
Janet Marie replied:
The sheets of rain coming down out of the clouds, in this very hard hitting storm, with the sun beginning to set. The light behind the rain, gave it a unique atmospheric phenomenal appearance. These are our typical monsoon cloud formations, but generally I am in the house, and don't notice. Lightning strikes are generally the reason. I joined FAA in June 2017, and that summer had the most AWEsome rainstorms. I tend to not do that any longer. Thank you Susan for stopping by and taking notice of my passion, which is capturing clouds in all their stages. I really appreciate it! Janet💕
Anita Bella Jantz
