Description
Bluffton, South Carolina, located in Beaufort County, is known as the “Heart of the Lowcountry.” During the 1800s, Bluffton was a summer resort for rich planters and also a ferry stop between Savannah and Beaufort. As the young town grew, a chapel was built in 1842 but eventually outgrown. By July of 1854, construction of the Church of the Cross had begun. Designed by Charleston architect E. B. White this beautiful Gothic structure cost about $5000 to build. The new church was consecrated in 1857. Spared by Federal troops during the Civil War this beautiful piece of history is well worth a visit.
