One of fifteen children of a Lithuanian coal miner, he was the only one to finish high school, but at age 16, he went to work in the coal mines, as did all his brothers. After WW II action as a tail gunner aboard a B-29 bomber, he went to Philadelphia to study art and joined an acting company as a set designer and bit player.
In 1949 he enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse school and soon played supporting roles in Hollywood films and TV productions. Craggy-faced and toughly built, he was tagged from the start for brawny character parts and often played parts as a punk, ethnic roughneck, or demented villain. But gradually, his unique facial features and powerful physique helped him secure lead roles.
