Description
The reliquary bust of Charlemagne, father of modern Europe exhibited at the Treasury of Aachen Cathedral. Charlemagne lived from 747 to 814, was King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and Emperor of the Romans from 800. During the Early Middle Ages, Charlemagne united the majority of western and central Europe. He was the first recognized emperor to rule from western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire around three centuries earlier.
The bust is constructed of wood, covered with hammered fine silver and gilt with gold, and dates to the 1349 coronation of Charles IV at Aachen where he wore this very crown.. The bust originated in Aachen while the crown probably predates it and is thought to have originated from Prague. Both are lavishly decorated with antique gems and precious stones along with finely carved cameos. As a reliquary it carries the skull cap of Charlemagne.
Aachen Cathedral began with the construction of Palatine Chapel as Charlemagne's place of worship in 792 and Charlemagne was buried there in 814. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

let us hope it will be protected from the evil in this world. That bust and the cathedral both though Aachen was previously also bombed badly.
Douglas Taylor replied:
The only protection we have is the vigilant and righteous will of good people everywhere. The people of Aachen, the people of Germany and Europe, they know and remember the terrible cost of not maintaining eternal vigilance. That is much in evidence today.

The black background sure helps to make it pop!! LFTw
Douglas Taylor replied:
Yes, Robert. The Treasury Museum is remarkably well lit with black walls for this display area. Thank you for your support!
