Description
During the winter monts 4x4 vehicles are allowed to drive on the local beaches with a permit. Areas that are off limits to driving are marked with sand fencing. In this location recent strong winds have caused a portion of the barrier to collapse. In general areas with dunes are restricted from off-road trucks and sports utility vehicles. The dunes provide important protection to the community when storms strike.
This image was made at the area known as the Point in Emerald Isle, a Crystal Coast community along the mid-coastal area of North Carolina. A sand replenishment project helped to restore this portion of the island and to protect the adjacent Bogue Inlet. The barrier islands that line the NC coast are in a constant state of change. As development occured on them it has been necessary to reduce these natural changes in order to protect homes and buisnesses located there. Protecting the beach communities is a modern story of man versus nature. The struggle to maintain manmade proerty takes place all along the Outer Banks.
