Description
Both Hampi's natural and man-made wonders are to be found on the Matanga Parvatam hillside. The arid climate and elements have combined to sculpt the most amazing rock forms. Alternating heat of the day and cold of the night caused rocks to split, and the wind and rain then gradually rounded them. An abundance of natural granite provided the perfect building medium for the city. Early structures were often cut and constructed in such a precise manner that no mortar was needed. Later Portuguese architects introduced the use of lime as a building material. Karnataka, India.
