Description
Northbrook, Illinois, USA - Seen while walking through the Somme Woods, a 269 acre wooded preserve with hardwood trees like oak, hickory, and black walnut, along with many varieties of wildflowers. These surprisingly artistic trails in the wood are made by tree-boring insects that belong to several different insect groups, including beetles, moths and horntail wasps, and other secondary predators that are attracted to weakened trees. The borers tunnel in the inner bark layer, which is the transport system for water and nutrients to the leaves., thereby causing damage to the tree.
One section of these trails looks like an elephant to me.
