Description
Sunrise casts a pink glow as morning dawns in the Grand Canyon.
In the background, the color and texture of the canyon’s rock formations captures the glint of sun, and colors in the light glow pink and coral, while hues in the shadows are blue, with hints of violet and lavender.
Blue Depths, the artwork, invites the viewer into a fresh, cool, quiet morning in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park. It is early in the morning – perhaps the viewer has been camping in a tent, and just emerged into the dawn – and the tourists have not yet arrived. The buses are not yet running, and the sound and the activity – even the conversation of hikers – does not penetrate into the morning’s still, quiet moment.
This is a time to stand quietly, meditatively, peacefully, while taking in the sheer majesty of the landscape, the rapidly changing colors as the sun makes its progress in the sky, the crunch of scree under one’s feet.
It is an impressionistic scene, almost abstract in the background, and the watercolor treatment of the image adds a sense of soft haziness to the strong, rough texture of the rocks and cliffs. What is most intriguing is the color: are the rocks really this color? Do the cliffs really reflect the blues and pinks and corals and cool, almost opalescent whites?
They do indeed, and this is part of the majesty, and the magic, of the Grand Canyon. It is a place of incredible, ever changing color, and even on a gray day the rocks shout forth their color. Limited foliage – tufts of grass, stubbornly tough trees and bushes – contrast texturally against the rocks, and we find our eyes wandering from the distance to close up, from the ground below our feet to the ground far, far below those feet in the depths of the canyon.
This is a place to think, to reflect, to be at peace, and to wonder.
