Description
The Archangel Saint Michael stands tall as a bronze and gold statue above the Liadsky Gate to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Independence Square in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine. With drawn sword and shield at the ready, Saint Michael is the patron saint and protector of Kyiv.
Saint Michael appeared on the coat of arms for Kyiv in the 16th century. In 1969, during the Soviet regime, St. Michael was replaced with chestnut leaves. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Saint Michael regained his place on the coat of arms in 1995, and this stunning statue was erected in 2002.
The Golden Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel is also a famous place in Kyiv, standing majestically on the top of a hill above the Dnieper River. Previously destroyed in the '30s by the Soviet authorities, it was then rebuilt in 1991 on the occasion of Ukraine’s independence.
