Description
American anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) head. The American anhinga is a bird native to the swamps of northern South America and the southern parts of the USA and Central America. It is also known as a darter, or snakebird. This last name comes from its appearance as it swims with only its head and long neck showing. It catches fish beneath the surface, spearing them quickly with its sharp bill. It takes the stunned fish back to the land to eat. Its feathers are not waterproof, and after leaving the water, it spreads its wings to dry them. Photographed at the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida, USA.
