Description
The "Allegory of Power", or "Kraft" in literal translation is a huge sculpture created by German sculptor Reinhold Begas in 1887. He chiseled this beautiful work from white Carrara marble, and it now resides in the German Historical Museum along the Unter den Linden in Berlin.
The female figure is wrapped in an antique-style robe belted under the breast and a lion's skin. The erect head, turned to the right of the figure, is covered by the lion's skin head. With her left arm she supports herself ready to jump. The right arm is brought to the left in front of the body against the movement of the head and the hand is supported on a club. The pose of the figure is modeled on Michelangelo's seated figure of Giuliamo de Medici. The attributes of a lion's skin and a club belong to the traditional depiction of Hercules in Roman mythology.
The statue was exhibited outdoors for nearly a century with considerable wear and damage as a result. It was extensively repaired and restored in 2009. How remarkable is it that a woman would be memorialized for her power in 19th Century art?
