Quiet And Noisy Art

Painting and drawing are quite and relaxing activities while sculpting and metal casting can be quite noisy.
Do you find your art work noisy or quietly relaxing?
Which do you prefer?

Thanks for posting Drew.

Hi Everyone - This is not an Image Thread..

I use to show with a group of stone carvers, they would joke about the swish swish swish of the brush. I also showed at the FE gallery in a Sacramento a couple of times and there were blacksmith demos on opening night. I love watching both stone carvers and iron workers produce stuff but ultimately am condemned to the swish, swish, swish! Hey Drew off the subject but are you on summer?

Why is this private?
There is no reason for it to be private and no, it is not an image thread as stated by David.
If I accidentally made it private, David can you please make it public?
Thanks

Ronald, I am off from teaching til August 2nd.

I think mine is quiet, until I get frustrated, then things can get quite loud lol.

Whatever I'm creating, whether it's sculpture or digital, .......

It's certainly the noisiest when I'm coming up with a new idea.

The NOISE in my brain is so strong, sometimes it incapacitates me.

Once an idea solidifies, I can quietly, go about actualizing it.

Thank you David and Abbie for making this public.

Once again, the subject is about the artist's perception of their own artistic endeavors and if the artist finds the process Quiet And/Or Noisy.

Yes, I agree that frustration can create noise in the mind of the artist.

For me, extreme focus is not relaxing and is a noise only experienced by the individual.

If I can't just walk away from an activity to return at my convenience, it is a noisy activity.

Nothing to do with me :-)

I'm noisy... But that's normal

I dunno...but I am thinking of Beethoven, the famous composer..the story says that even when he lost his hearing he still was composing.

"The NOISE in my brain is so strong, sometimes it incapacitates me."

Yes, many of my concepts earlier in my life did this to me as well.

Remembering the concepts now that I am much older I'm able to bring them to fruition at a much more relaxing pace. Many past concepts have manifested because they were treated not as something that must be done but something that will be done if time allows.

The new stuff(sculpting and casting)keeps me on my toes but puts me in that trance like state which is a huge demanding noise that is hard to ignore.

Sometimes my art work is noisy, sometimes it is quietly relaxing. Do I prefer one over the other? No, because a little of both is good for me. When it is noisy, it is like cleaning out the thought closet which needs to be done and when it it relaxing, it is time to rest the brain. Either way, it is like a process that just flows the way it needs to.

I don't think the internal noise can be completely eliminated unless an artist stays within their particular comfort zone.
The external noise and the demand to keep others and oneself safe are somewhat a new set of challenges with the new track that I am on and even though the relaxation factor is reduced, the results are rewarding.

When I'm outdoors creating photos there is nothing but the relaxing sounds of nature. Birds, crashing waves, wind, the most beautiful music of all.

If I'm creating still life photos, or working post processing on the computer, I do it in complete silence. No music or tv background noise. Just the sound of my shutter or mouse clicking.

I too prefer a quieter environment where sitting in a comfortable position helps drawing or painting an idea evokes a meditative state of being. General ambient sounds, people talking, and other white noise helps with these two types of activities.

Whenever critical thinking, cognitive attention, and problem solving are part of the process then the mental noise kicks in. Working through this process is demanding until all the elements are understood and become automatic; then the internal noise dissipates and the meditative state can occur.

Mastery of any media IMHO is achieved when the artist's craft becomes the artist's means of meditation.

I am a very (!) quiet person - i live quietly i plan, arrange and execute most of my images methodically and quietly ... the result (Image) sometimes screams as loud as thunder though .. perhaps sometimes my images have to scream for me because i often feel too (self)controlled to do so.

My recent collection is entitled Screaming Geisha Astronauts!!!

But the irony is - in deep-space - no-one hears you scream!!!

So am I noisy? Or am I not-noisy? In my art!

:))

"the result (Image) sometimes screams as loud as thunder"
Yes indeed.

I wonder if for some, they are able to achieve this result because they are in a meditative state or are they in a chaotic mental state whereas their intent is to produce load expressionistic imagery.

For myself, mostly either result happens while I am in a meditative state.

I like quiet. Don't like noise when I am concentrating. I am as absent minded as it is. Don't need any distractions. No need to add fuel to the fire so to speak

@ Tibor, Beethoven noticed his hearing problems while composing his 6th symphony ("The Pasture") it went downhill from there. He was for 99% deaf by the time he composed the 9th. (He was only able to hear the very lowest notes)

Great to hear from you Rudy! Nice Avatar. It's been a while and quiet in your absence.

Thanks Drew. I have been busy, still am. Nice play of words!

RE my avatar, those are my actual walk around cameras, well not the Rolleiflex at the moment, it needs service. The other one is a Zeiss Ikon 6 x 9 cm rangefinder from 1938. Works like new

p.s. I mellowed out a little the last few years :) (finally!)

When my mind screams, often I make art.

Recently while chasing hot air balloons the field was quiet waiting, then the billowing sound of the flame and the balloon was near.

I was socialized extrovert. In my digital art world some think I am introvert.
No I explain, I call myself contemplative. My reach is very extroverted but the diligence of work is very quiet & focused.

Sometimes I portray myself as The Scream, silently screaming for creative content to find paid audience.

I connect with my heart and mind and watch them come together to create an idea than from there I join them for the piece that comes to light.

I am wanting to work with other artist who are interested in creative writing with art named Story Time. I have a few pieces on the site but if anyone would like to create and try , let me know. Its allot of fun and strengthens the creative process and out of it comes an art piece that may of not normally come out on its own. Both artist write each other a creative little short sentence or two statement than each create a piece of art from each others creative writing.

When I see a topic in the publics eye that has a hidden meaning I try to blast the truth out into my art. I would have to say LOUD!

If I am drawing or painting the only noise is from whatever is on Netflicks. If I am working on my wood items the Dremel tool is very noisy.

Working with a lot of grinding tools here too. Very noisy but satisfying.

I just spent all afternoon, with a very, very loud, old sander, sanding down bases for upcoming vulture sculptures.

A welcome break, from the job of creating

I find my art work contemplatively quiet... But my artwork endlessly talkative.

"When my mind screams, often I make art."
When this happens to me, I find it impossible to paint or draw. Perhaps this is the time to break out a hammer and a chisel and form something tough into shape.
Being new to sculpture, I have a lot to learn.

What ever it takes to follow the inspiration Drew, sometimes it's noise like the sound of copper being hammered other times it's the sound of a flux core welder and sparks flying that does it for me and sometimes it's just the sound of silence.

Different types of artistic mediums are loud and others are quite.
Some demand absolute mental concentration and others are loose and relaxing.
Different types of artist personalities are loud and others are quiet and subtle.
The art produced can be loud or quiet, provocative or cerebral.
Diversity in art is a product of variation in the artistic inclinations and attitudes.
