Is Tumblr A Good Place To Feature And Sell Art?

Hi all, I'd like to know if anyone here uses Tumblr, and if it really helps with your marketing. I'm trying to expand my reach beyond Twitter. Thanks!

LOL, okay. Short and to the point.

I've thought about Instagram, but it's owned by Facebook who is evil.

The thing is, I have read sooooo many comments from folks here who talk about their social media accounts to advertise their work, and yet they often complain about them. I'm just trying to figure this out...

"... Facebook who is evil." Perhaps, but FB and IG are still a couple of the best SM sites to marker your work. Join and participate in groups that match your subject matter on FB. Posting in groups definitely helps drive viewers and potential buyers to my work.

What about Etsy?

Any platform can work if you put in the time and effort required to find a following. Just putting some stuff on Ebay, Etsy, Tumbler, Instagram and expecting a miracle is going to be disappointing as there are millions of other would-be sellers trying to get attention.

You want to create as many links back to your FAA account as possible. https://www.dogfordstudios.com/i-sell-over-100-prints-and-products-on-fine-art-america-every-month-you-can-too/

I agree with Ed, no SM works well... and they all work great. If all you are going to do is post your art most likely you will see little to no return regardless of the platform. If you take the time to learn and keep up with the techniques that increase your reach on any platform you will do much better. However that takes a lot of energy and time, and is something I really dislike doing which is why I don't sell much. My only SM is Twitter and I don't really work it, I mainly use it because the bots like Twitter and tweets do well in Google search

That said I sell far more originals than prints just by uploading to ebay and Etsy, (they get far more traffic than FAA), . I have sold prints through drop shipping on Etsy and there are artists that do well with that but I stopped doing it because I wasn't selling enough to be worth the hassle, and also the fact that I have no control over production or shipping made me anxious, and in fact my last drop ship sale on Etsy was packaged poorly and got damaged and dealing with that was quite stressful. I'm on POD so I don't have to deal with that stress, so I stopped drop shipping.

I have generated some sales through Tumblr. I don't use it as much now as I did years ago. I attribute whatever success I have had there to the fact that it was the SM site that I built up the largest most engaged following on.

One thing I like about Tumblr, is that your posts don't seem to be as ephemeral as they are on FB, Instagram, and Twitter. Even with sporadic activity on the site, posts that I made years ago still get lots of shares and interaction.

A lot of the users on Tumblr curate content. They build up a following who enjoys the subject matter of the curated content. So if I post a still life with whiskey, and someone re-blogs the post...a bunch of whiskey drinkers see my work and all of my links.

Tumblr is not what it once was with changes through the years, and the addition of advertising...but if you really want to work it, I'd say it's still worth a try.

I sell quite well on Etsy.

But, like David King, it's with tangible originals.

I'm leery about doing drop shipping of prints, because of shared responsibility.

If you can find a place that will readily make prints for you...I can see where Etsy might work well for you
