Being around carpenters during my youth gave me an appreciation for tools such as this one. In fact, I really enjoy most hand tools, and those who have the ability to use them well.
The key to working with a hand chisel, is making sure that it is sharp. I know that seems obvious, but if your chisel edge is not sharp, then when you strike the tool you merely crush and tear the wood. You need a sharp edge to give you clean sharp cuts. The most difficult part of using a chisel, is learning how to sharpen it properly. -YoPedro
