Description
San Jose, Northern California, USA - Part of the warm springs area in Alum Rock Park, the stone structure in the foreground is an old grotto for enjoying the warm springs. Right inside is a bench to sit on as the springs flow out from behind you. On the other side of the stone bridge, which crosses the Upper Penitencia River, are two other grottos. One of San Jose's oldest municipal parks, Alum Rock Park, founded in 1872, consists of 720 acres and is located in the foothills of the Diablo Range, at the eastern edge of San Jose. From 1890 to 1932 it was a nationally known health spa with 27 mineral springs and the grottos that were built to contain the springs . Today the park is known for its hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and picnicking, as well as being one of the sites of the Youth Science Institute. It's a great place to see many native trees and other plants, as well as animals and birds.

Very intriguing structure, nice shot
Martha Sherman replied:
Thank you so much, Mick! I'm not sure why they needed ornate structures like these just for sitting in the springs, but they are certainly interesting.

Both interesting and beautiful, Martha, and a great capture! l/f

Thank you very much, Linda! This is a fascinating park filled with old and new human-made structures, and many wonderful plants, trees, and wildlife. I'm mad at myself that we lived here over 30 years before going there.
