Description
Twilight in Sin City was created as a free project in my Drawing 5 class at Ball State University in 1999. The only stipulation on the project was the drawing must be a nocturne. With that vague stipulation, I began to create this piece inspired by my first trip to Las Vegas with my now wife, Lisa. The imagery came from my personal photographs, pages from tattoo magazines, comic books, and a few appropriations from artists whose work I love. The tumbling composition was inspired by the works of James Rosenquist and Lari Pittman. They were two artists whose works were and continue to be a source of inspiration.
The bottom panel is a full size sheet of illustration board. The top panel is about one third that size. The entire piece was rendered with colored pencils aside for a very small area where I experimented with watercolor pencils. The original piece hangs in my studio.
