Description
Alviso, California, USA - Out for a walk in Alviso Marina County Park, along the southern end of San Francisco Bay. The Alviso Slough Trail led past this salt pond (aka evaporation pond, evaporators, concentrators, concentration pond), part of the San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds system which consisted of 16,500 acres that have been used as salt evaporation ponds since the California Gold Rush period. This acreage was formerly wetlands when the Ohlone Indians used it to produce salt. After the 1850s, industrialized salt production began on 80% of the Bay's wetlands. Since 2003, many ponds have been closed and the areas are slowly being returned to their natural state. The salt ponds are different colors depending on the salinity and the season and range from magenta to blue-green. The mountains are part of the Diablo Range. There is also some construction visible along the water's edges which has to do with a restoration project.

Fabulous landscape photograph of a salt pond in California with mountainous background, great reflections, and composition, Martha! F/L

Thank you so much, Morris, for these lovely comments and for the F/L. That area is changing as they remove the salt ponds and return them to wetlands.
