In the pupa or chrysalis stage, the Monarch caterpillar ( Danaus plexippus ) spins a silk pad on to a horizontal substrate..in this case, the leaf of a giant leopard orchid ( Grammatophyllum speciosum ). It then hangs from the pad by the last pair of prolegs upside down, sheds its skin, leaving itself encased in an articulated green exoskeleton. ...And during the next 7-14 days, the adult butterfly will form inside ...
